Week 006 - 06/01/16

Week 006 - Scheduling will be kind of inconsistent for the next few weeks as I figure how to balance personal life and work with the blog, please sit tight and enjoy!

Amigo the Devil - Diggers
Release Date: Feburary 19th, 2013
Genre: Murder Folk
Price: $3.00
For Fans Of: N/A
Recommended Tracks: The Recluse, The Weight
Never has mutilating and wearing the skin of your victims been this classy. Amigo muses with the mindset of an infamous serial killer, one Mr. Ed Gein, as he juxtaposes thematics of self realization and love with the topics of body horror and insanity for one of folk music's greatest oddities and jammiest jams. Production and instrumental work is very exqistue with a fine layer of blues and rock giving the album a postive, up-beat swing despite the overly morbid subject matter. For listeners looking for the wild side of folk.

Holy Ghost Tent Revival - So Long I Screamed
Release Date: December 14th, 2008
Genre: Bluegrass
Price: $6.99
For Fans Of: N/A
Recommended Tracks: Down The Street, Walking Over My Grave, Steamboat, Phone Syndrome, Getting Over Your Love, Needing You, Love Emergency, Hammer Fell, The End To...
Arguably the most fun you will have with a bluegrass record. Incredibly exquisite horn arrangements give the bluegrass elements an extra layer of energy and give the album a hook that just begs you to snap along with the beat. Vocal performance is equally sublime, the harmonizing that litters the record is so buttery smooth that it elegantly slides through the swing production like an earworm unlike any other. For listeners who want something sweet and fun.

Antagony - Days of Night
Release Date: December 21st, 2008
Genre: Deathcore
Price: $6.00
For Fans Of: Hacksaw to the Throat, Oblivion, All Shall Perish
Recommended Tracks: The Truth Will Be Known, The Ladder, Voyage, Exhale Her Poison, El Banquete
Pay no mind and excuse my underwhelming knowledge of metal music for this entry. Antagony are considered by many to be one of the most important bands for the "deathcore" genre as they were performing many of the elements that make up the genre years before bands that became famous (or infamous) in the genre were seen mimicing them. Meanwhile members of the band went on to become members of bigger, well known metal bands after the group's disbandment in 2009.

Days of Night was the final record from the group and easily their best overall. The album mixes elements of grind and post-rock in a "deathcore" environment for an absolutely beautiful record that knows how to reserve beauty and balance "punishing" riffs, so to speak. Absolutely stunning record that I fully recommend regardless of your opinion on genre tags. As this record is a very unique one, for sure.

Black Eye - We Never Sleep
Release Date: Janurary 16, 2016
Genre: Psychedelic/Electronic/Dream Pop
Price: $5.00
For Fans Of: N/A
Recommended Tracks: Dirt, Hearsay, Hot on the Trail, Confession
Black Eye is... well, somebody. Information on this particular artist is incredibly scarce, she has a Facebook but ever since its quick construction in early 2016, all that has been shared on it are links to various artists and videos. Beyond there, nothing. Matter of fact, I can't even remember where exactly I found this record, it just kind of... appeared in my Wishlist tab on Bandcamp.

Maybe thats what makes We Never Sleep such an interesting EP. This record is a very thick, hazy dream pop collection that suffocates with rugged, heavy synths and fuzzy guitars that push the vocalist, Mrs. Black Eye herself, into the background as a calming echo in the chaos. Production on this record is excellent, with multiple passages through the songs dedicated to the instrumentals just kind of drifting in their own oddness. Its an odd EP, but a good one, give it a look or two.

Akara - The World Beyond
Release Date: August 5th, 2013
Genre: Neo-Classical/Downtempo
Price: FREE
For Fans Of: Varien
Recommended Tracks: The Crystal Palace, Adoration of the Light, Resonance, Sky Dancer, Te Royal Antechamber
A downtempo/neo-classical record that impresses. Dreamy vocals and orchestral arrangements are lightly peppered upon the glitchy, chunk electronic arrangements to create an angelic atmosphere similar to that depicted on the album art. Production is great, incredibly crisp and fresh without ever missing a beat and using drum samples and violin arrangements ever so gracefully for a perfect soundscape. A little longer than most albums, with various tracks nearing the 10 minute mark; so sit tight, buckle in, and enjoy!
